What is excessive dog barking in the UK?

In the UK, excessive dog barking is not defined by a specific legal decibel limit or exact time threshold. Instead, under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, barking is considered a statutory noise nuisance if it unreasonably and materially interferes with a neighbour's use and enjoyment of their property.

Most councils in the UK, however, define excessive nuisance dog barking by DURATION, FREQUENCY, TIME OF DAY and ENVIRONMENT.

DURATION

Continuous barking lasting 30 minutes or more, or a cumulative total exceeding two hours within a 24-hour period

FREQUENCY

Frequent, regular, or intermittent barking over long stretches of time

TIME OF DAY

Barking during sensitive hours, such as late at night, early in the morning, or on Sundays and public holidays

ENVIRONMENT

Whether the noise is disruptive to the average person in that specific local setting
